Label Game 2

For Label Game 1, please click here! :)

At the recommendation of my coworkers, I decided to try Blue Bell ice cream. It was okay. One particular ingredient seems very odd to me though. See if you can guess which one.

Ummm...an (insanely unhealthy!) ingredient breakdown for almonds?? Almonds are just almonds! I don't think I'll be buying Blue Bell ice cream again in the future.

Made with loving care indeed!

New Bed + $35 Gift Certificate GIVEAWAY

A few years ago, Sexy Nerd and I spent 3 weeks apart while my mom and I visited family in the Seychelles. Although he made it seem like he didn't want me to leave, Sexy Nerd was secretly looking forward to it. He had a surprise planned. For years, I had wanted to buy a pretty new bed, just like this one:

Unfortunately, being a full-time student and working as a Pizza Hut manager didn't leave me with any money to actually buy a bed. Sexy Nerd was also a poor college student. What to do, right?

Build a bed, of course!

It took up the entire bedroom in our rental house!

Of course, we have since moved into our own house and our tastes have changed. Want to guess where I am heading with this?

Fear not, my bloggy friends. Although the photo above looks like a hopeless mess, our bedroom remodel is actually close to finished (with more photos coming soon!) One of the last steps is to sand down this ginormous bed and restain it a dark brown. *Ugh!*

We're quite tempted to move this bed into the guest room, as is, and just buy something new. I've been browsing through the cheap bedroom furniture from CSN. Sure, a new bed wouldn't have any sentimental value, but it also wouldn't need any work!

Would you take the hard-working route and risk splinters and polyurethane headaches to save this bed? If so, you're a Sexy Nerd! I think you know who I am (hint: Sexy Nerd has never posted on this blog, despite my pleading).

What's that, you say? You don't care about our cruddy remodel or do-it-yourself bed story? Geez! We'd better get on to the main event!

$35 CSN Stores Gift Certificate Giveaway!

It may not be enough for a new bed, but there are plenty of other things you can buy with $35 at CSN.com, like:

I would use this to make my all-time favorite dessert - Baked Alaska

Incidentally, if anyone out there is wondering what Lamb would like for Christmas, think of this as one of those *hint, hint* kind of blog posts! I will be randomly selecting a winner on or around October 14, 2010. This giveaway is open to all U.S. and Canada residents.

Because White Doors Are No Fun

When we remodeled our kitchen, we painted the door to the laundry room with chalkboard paint. Let me tell you, if you don't have a chalkboard in your house, you are missing out! It is so much fun to write wacky messages together!

The paint was a little tricky to obtain. They keep it locked up at Lowes, where I suppose it will be safe from all those elementary school teachers with bad intentions. We can only hope, right?

Biscuit mostly speaks Spanish.

This one really isn't as awful as it seems (really!) It all started with Sexy Nerd's parents looking forward to spending time with him on their way to the funeral.

Christmas in August? Sure, why not!

Cartoon Sexy Nerd never leaves home without his trusty Pocket Protector

Neither of us speaks Spanish, (other than a few phrases we remember from college,) but the phrases are supposed to say something about our dog Biscuit hiding under the safety of the table and searching for her turtle. If our online translator can be believed, it does.

Note that Pica is shedding profusely, like usual. She does not speak Spanish and is just mocking poor Biscuit, who I must say looks quite charming in her little cartoon sweater.

Donde esta mi tortuga

Tortuga

We had planned to update our chalkboard door with a new design for every holiday, special event, etc., but we've been having too much fun making fun of our dogs (with love, of course!) with this design to change it. Does anyone else out there love making fun of your dogs?

Menu for Sexy Nerd's Birthday Dinner

Thanks to everyone who offered recipe ideas for Sexy Nerd's birthday! I was having a tricky time deciding what to make, but luckily a great idea occured to me. I asked him what he wanted! It's such a simple concept, right?

He said anything would be fine and that he's sure whatever I made would be delicious, which is sweet but also so very not helpful! After a little pestering, he decided on green chili chicken enchiladas.

Here is the menu:

Pretty New Living Room Pillow

Guess what! I am a lucky duck. I entered the giveaway for a homemade stenciled pillow on the Cheap Chic Home blog and actually won! I never win anything!

Isn't it pretty? I put it in our little reading nook in the living room.

Isn't it just the cutest little pillow ever?

On a quick side note, my bloggy friends, Wednesday is Sexy Nerd's birthday (he's so old!) I want to make him a romantic dinner after work. If you have any ideas, please send me a link. Thanks!

Oh, and did I mention that it should also be inexpensive and fairly easy to make? I'm sure you knew that already ;)

Even Better Ramen Noodles Recipe

Let me start out by saying that I am a chocoholic. At work, I've developed a somewhat unfortunate reputation as the girl who pigs out every time another office sends us anything chocolaty or whenever an employee restocks our candy drawer (betcha never thought your kid's dentist had one of those!) Those dozen Mississippi Mud cupcakes that were just here? I ate them. You knew I was working today so if you didn't get in there and get one, it's your own silly fault.

What does any of this shameless chocolate-talk have to do with today's recipe? As much as I love chocolate, I love Ramen Noodles even more. Just look at them:

Hey there, gorgeous!

I will always remember "The Noodles That Got Away", otherwise known as when my mom threw my bowl of just-made noodles down the sink in 4th grade. I don't remember what I'd done to make her angry, but I do know that I'd been looking forward to them all day at school and that it was THE LAST PACKET! Scarred for life? Quite frankly, yes. Yes I was.

So, my friends, use this recipe carefully. If you see an angry person coming toward your noodles, protect them! I hope, of course, that you never find yourself in this situation.

Even Better Ramen Noodles (They taste better AND have less sodium! Win-win!)

What you'll need:

Any variety of chicken noodles, curry powder, and milk. Almond milk actually seems to work the best, but it's expensive and any kind of milk will do. Well, maybe not strawberry milk...

What to do:
  1. Make your package of noodles the way you usually do. I microwave mine for a few minutes in a plastic container. I'm halfway through reading Slow Death by Rubber Duck (great book, by the way) and know that I shouldn't cook food this way. Yes, I do have perfectly good glass containers I can use, but I figure that I've microwaved my containers so many times already that all the BPA must have leached out by now. That is how this works, right?
  2. When your noodles are nearly cooked, drain all of the water and pour in about 1/4 C of milk. Cook until boiling. When preparing my noodles in the microwave, I heat everything for 1 minute.
  3. Sprinkle your noodles with curry powder to taste. I love curry powder so I cover my noodles generously.
  4. Add 1/2 the chicken-flavor seasoning packet and stir. Pig out on the silky, salty deliciousness. Nifty bonus? You now have the rest of the noodle seasoning for another cooking attempt.

Savory Zucchini Pancakes

These are very simple to make. We eat them as a snack but they would also make a great side dish. The recipe below is for 2 people.

Sexy Nerd has been growing a lot of zucchini in his garden.

Why he wrapped the larger zucchini in plastic is anyone's guess.

 Beat 2 eggs.

Personally, I think photos of beating eggs are fun.

Coarsely grate 1 zucchini. There is no need to peel it.

If you're looking for a review of my Kitchen Aid food processor, I'm sure there will be one posted one day. For now, just know that I am not a fan (it leaks!)

Mix 1 cup of zucchini in with your eggs. There is no need to drain any moisture from the zucchini.

Mix in 1/2 a cup of pancake mix. Does it concern me that Sexy Nerd and I go through several of these 10 pound bags a year? A little.

Oooooh, drippy.

Mix in a pinch of onion salt, a dash of garlic powder, and a generous sprinkling each of curry powder and italian seasoning. I love curry powder so I tend to add at least a tablespoon. Sexy Nerd, however, is not much of a curry powder fan.

Drop spoonfuls onto a hot, nonstick pan. Cover.

These are set to about medium-low so that the zucchini has time to become tender.

Personally, I like to use my Proctor Silex griddle for things like pancakes.

Ours was a steal at Bed Bath and Beyond because it had a broken leg. It cooks the same, with or without 2 legs!

Check them in a few minutes. They should be ready to flip.

Toward the end of making pancakes, do you ever get impatient and just throw all the remaining batter onto the pan? I do. I'm the same way with cookies.

Really, they taste the exact same and you can always cut them into smaller pancakes after they start cooking.

Bonus points if you spotted Pica lurking in the shadows.

The perfect snack for Sexy Nerd's painting break!

Kitchen Pig is a fan.
